What happens when all of a sudden a middle class family becomes rich?

What happens when one set of rules exists for the son and another for the daughter?

Jatin & Sanam are the children of Surendre (Anupam Kher) and Sushma (Sharmila Tagore), a working middle class couple and Karan is Jatin's friend. Karan's father Amarnath (Navin Nischal) has no time for his son as he is involved in a clandestine affair with a married woman Prema (Moushumi) which results in Karan being spoilt to the extent of working as a carrier for the local smuggler Uncle Joe (Sadashiv Amrapurkar).

Surendra and Sushma sell off their ancestral land and find themselves rolling in money. Sanam is brought back from the hostel, the family shifts into a huge pent-house. Jatin has all the money to spend in the world and to give parties, and on one such party Karan and Sanam meet, and for Karan it is love at first sight, and soon he wins over Sanam's love, but Sanam's parents object. They object to Karan's lack of wealth, to Karan's father's affairs, to Karan's involvement with Uncle Joe. Innumerable hindrances and blockades are thrown across the lovers' path, and ultimately "JAWAAI" - youth rebels... They run away from their home.

Does Amarnath side with the two lovers?

Do Surendre & Sushma accept the strength of true love?

Does Karan's past with Uncle Joe come in his way?

For all these questions there is one answer "JAWAANI".
